Insulation Systems - Ice Rinks

FAQs

Q: What R-value is the Energy Miser® Insulated Ceiling & Wall System available in?
A: The Energy Miser® system is available at R-10 and higher R-values.

Q: The ceiling I have now is littered with puck holes. Is your material strong enough to prevent this?
A: Yes! The material used is designed specifically for use in ice rinks. It’s not only “puck proof” but its low-emissivity characteristics will have a dramatic impact on the savings to your utility bills.

Q: What kind of thermal savings can I achieve using the Energy Miser® system?
A: The Energy Miser® system is ASTM C236 Guarded Hot Box tested to perform to certified R-values. It is possible to save as much as 60% on your utility bills.

Q: How does the Energy Miser® system install in my ice arena?
A: The Energy Miser® hardware parallels to the purlins and is attached to the bottom, suspending down the adequate distance needed for proper ventilation.

Q: What does proper ventilation mean?
A: It is recommended that ridge and eave vents be installed in order to control condensation the cavity between the insulation and the roof deck.

Q: Can ICA install the ventilation?
A: Yes! The crews ICA sends to install the insulation have a great amount of experience installing the ventilation. It is recommended that an independent engineer or consultant be contacted to insure the proper quantity of ventilation is used for your facility.

Q: What is the Energy Miser® hardware?
A: The hardware consists of rows of galvanized tubes spaced at 10'-12' on center. They attach to virtually any type building using an I-Bolt and the appropriate type clip-head for the structure.

Q: Can I insulate my walls with the Energy Miser® system?
A: Yes! The Energy Miser® system is designed so that the walls can be insulated in conjunction with the ceiling. In doing this, the ceiling and wall are manufactured as one piece.

Q: I have this ugly “blow-on” insulation that keeps falling onto the ice. Do I have to remove it?
A: No! The Energy Miser® system can be installed without having to remove any existing insulation.

Q: Does ICA have a representative or installer in my area that can look at my ice rink?
A: ICA has offices in Kansas and New York. Contact us at (800) 373-4262 for pricing inquiries. We have crews that travel across the country that can do installations in every size rink.

Q: I have a maintenance crew and I think I can install the Energy Miser® myself. Can this be done?
A: Yes! ICA can sell the materials only if you want to install the system yourself or have a local contractor do it. We have an installation manual and phone support for any questions. You can also hire one of ICA’s foremen for a couple of days to get your crew trained.

Q: Is the Energy Miser® system my only option that will provide a new ceiling?
A: No! ICA also gives you the option for a fabric over cable system. This consists of installing high-tension galvanized wire at 10' to 12' intervals and installing the same facing that’s used on the insulated ceiling. It also eliminates the need for ventilation.

Q: What if I have a sprinkler system in my ice rink?
A: The minimum clearance required to install the Energy Miser® system is approximately 14 inches. Lowering a sprinkler system is relatively inexpensive compared to the thermal savings achieved using the Energy Miser®. Consult your local sprinkler contractor to verify what the minimum clearance requirement must be from the sprinkler head to the ceiling.

Q: Do I have to have to shut down the rink or remove the ice while the Energy Miser® system is being installed?
A: No! Since 1985 ICA has installed over 14 million square feet of insulation with little or no interruption to daily operations. ICA can run their lifts on top of the ice so there’s no need to remove it.

Q: What warranty does the Energy Miser® system have?
A: ICA offers a one-year warranty on materials and workmanship.
